MFA Reading Summary
The public reading I went to was an MFA reading at Home Sweet Harlem. It was across the street from CCNY, so it was easy to navigate and didn’t take a long time for me to get there. When I entered the comfortable sized café, I looked around and witnessed people lavishly drinking coffee, wine, or some other beverage which was unknown to me. The aura I felt when I entered had me at ease, and I knew that this public reading was one that I was definitely going to enjoy. When the public readings started, they had open mic in which anyone who was present could sign up and read the piece that they had to share. Because many people went up for open mic, I thought why not? So, I find myself standing in a room full of graduate students and I begin. After I was done, I was applauded. That applause made me feel safe at that moment, and I was the happiest person in the world! The coordinator also commented that MFA would be looking for me when I entered graduate school, which will hopefully also be CCNY. I went back to my seat and observed how the artists communicated with one another. They gave one another pats on the back, they encouraged them, they even shouted out their friends! Many of them came up to me and congratulated me on a job well done. Later on, I heard the exotic works of many of the graduate students. My favorite was Constantine Jonah’s piece about Death. I didn’t really think it was about death, he made me believe that it was a man he was falling for at the bar, someone to be with for that night, and I believe the words on play that he used were unique and amazing!
