MFA Reading Summary #2
As I once again entered Home Sweet Harlem, I was met with familiar faces. All looked up and when they saw me, they smiled warmly. I was approached by a man in a wheelchair who claimed to be Brendan Costello, the man who messaged me on Facebook and tagged me in the event. I was a picked reader! I’m not even a graduate student, but I’m so happy that they gave me this chance to improve myself in writing. As I walked in with my mother this time, and took a seat, I ordered some food and Tamanna joined us very soon. There were less people at this particular reading, but the aura of the room was amazingly calm. I loved the introduction that Aleyah gave me when I went up. I was still shaking even from the first time of volunteering myself for open mic. I tried calming myself down. I looked up and made eye contact with Constantine Jones. Wow! He nodded his head, trying to reassure me that it was alright and to just start talking as if I was speaking to my best friend. I started babbling on about being an undergraduate and yes, I do hockey.
*Laughter and applause*
At that moment, I felt loved and wanted. I read my poetry and when I finished, I took my seat. We ordered more food and decided to party right there and then for my success and my poetry being picked to be read. In the end, I ended up with Constantine’s contact info and the deal that we would work on a piece someday in the future. As I walked home, I told my mother how happy I was and that it truly was magical night for me.
